Spina bifida

What is Spina Bifida 
Spina bifida is a common birth defect to the central nervous system. It is a neural tube defect, it occurs when the bones of spinal cord are not completely form and resulting in formation of incomplete spinal canal. In most of the cases, the spinal cord and the tissues which covers the spinal cord stick out of the child's back.

The cause of spina bifida 
Cause of spina bifida is unknown but the deficiency of folic acid is thought to play a major part of this. If a baby is born with spina bifida, following childrens in that particular family have a higher chance than the general population.


Types of Spina bifida

Spina bifida occulta :
In this the and the spina bifida defect is not visible, it is discovered accidentally while the victim has undergone with an X-ray or MRI for any other purpose.

The membrane or tissue that surrounds the spinal cord which may enlarges and form a cyst and it is invisible through the skin and causes no problems.

Myelomeningocele :
This is the most severe and complex form of spina bifida. It is also called as Spina bifida cystica. A part of spinal cord and the membrane and tissue covers the spinal cord and exposed and visible on the outside of the body.
