Spinal cord discs are the small cushions that fit between each vertebra. Due to aging these discs can "dry out" and begin to crack, resulting in less cushioning between the vertebrae. For most people, degenerative disc disease can be successfully treated with non-surgical treatments like physical therapy and exercise. Surgery is only considered when if patients have not achieved relief over six months of conservative care surgery is preferred.
