Stop living with Traumatic Brain Injury !

What is Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic Brain Injury is an intracranial injury in the brain that is caused by bad falls, accidents, and violence. Traumatic Brain Injury is appeared when brain gets severe shock or blow. Generally, brain injuries are classified into three stages: Mild, Moderate, and Severe

Brain injuries can harm people in many ways, such as people can experience memory loss, sleep deprivation, internal haemorrhaging, and possibility of death. An early treatment is highly required in traumatic and severe brain injuries.

What are the treatment options for traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic Brain Injury normally required immediate, ongoing and long term treatment whether it is minor or severe. The initial stages of treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury include sustaining life and avoiding any further injury. The later stages require participation in rehabilitation programs and assisitive technologies. Rehabilitation programs are directed to overcome, minimise, or work to lower disabilities in the patients so that they can live and work independently.

What are immediate treatment options for Traumatic Brain Injury?

The immediate treatment options for traumatic Brain Injury are as follows:
  • Checking and removing of life threatening blood clots
  • Medicate patients
  • Monitor and operate to relieve high levels of intracranial pressure
  • Put effected person on life support systems, if required
  • When patient is stable, shifted to sub-acute treatment centers

What are the sub-acute treatments for traumatic Brain Injury?

Sub-acute treatment centers are the specialised care facilities in which medical staff is well trained to understand and evaluate the patient’s disabilities, impairments, and possibility of recovery.  Doctors in these centers can develop a treatment plan to help patients and their families. These treatment plans can include rehabilitation programs and chronic traumatic Brain Injury treatments. These centers help patients to live independently, with the care of family, or move into long term care centers.

What are the long term treatment options for traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic Brain Injury treatment centers provides treatment in the form of
  • Assistive technologies such as use of wheel chair, specialized device for mobility or speech
  • Counseling
  • Physical therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Medication

What is the aim of providing long term treatment to traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

The aim of providing treatment on every step of problem is
  • To make patient social again
  • To overcome patient depression, emotional problems and increase self esteem
  • To learn again proper speaking and communication
  • To learn again walking

The ultimate goal of Center forBrain and Spine Chennai is to provide chronic care and rehabilitation programs to patients for fast recovery and make able to live independently. The centre provides excellent treatment options for traumatic brain injuries. Dr.Shyam Sundar Krishnan is a qualified and experienced Neurosurgeon in Tamil Nadu to treat traumatic brain injuries.

Brain Aneurysm – You Can’t See it Coming

A brainaneurysm is a bulging, weak area in the wall of arteries that supplies blood to the brain. Sometimes, it ruptures, releasing blood into the skull and causing a stroke. It may also lead to brain damage or death may result.
Risk Factors

  • Family history
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking

What are the symptoms?

An aneurysm will cause problems before rupture, by pressing on areas in the brain. When this happens, the person will suffer from:
  • Severe headaches
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Changes in speech
  • Neck pain
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness.
  • Seizures.

How is it treated?

The type of treatment suitable for you will be based on your age, size of the aneurysm, any additional risk factors, and your overall health.

The following are the procedures used to manage brain aneurysms:

  • Endovascular embolization – A small tube is inserted into the affected artery and a soft metal coil or mesh is used to fill the aneurysm, reducing blood flow and making it less likely to rupture. These procedures are less invasive than surgery.
  • Surgical clipping - Placing a small metal clip around the base of the aneurysm to isolate it from normal blood circulation, thus decreasing the pressure on the aneurysm.

WHEN DOES YOUR SPINE NEED SURGERY?

If you Are suffering from some spinal condition, you are not alone. Many people have been experiencing this at some point in their lifetime, often without realizing it until the appearance of persistent and palpable symptoms. Becoming well informed about the spinal condition is the first step toward finding a potential treatment and resuming back to a  pain-free life. We are here to help!

Backbone or spine is considered to be the most important part of the body.  It has five regions namely cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum and coccyx.  Dislocation or defects of the spine cause back pain. The remedies suggested for back pain includes an application of medicine and oral medications.

In some cases of back pain, the problems persist even after medications. The remedy for this is a surgery.  It is safe to rely on experienced doctors for surgeries so that surgeries become problem less. You can depend on Dr. Shyam Sundar K for spine surgery in Chennai.  He is the best consultant neurosurgeon in Chennai.

In certain cases where nerves are in a compressed stage, osteoarthritis with bone spurs and herniated spines surgeries will be required to sort out the issue.

Due to herniation, the disk becomes deformed, and the removal of this deformity is called Diskectomy.  The minimally Invasive back surgery is very advantageous as only small incisions are made for surgery resulting no damage in the muscles around the spines.
In Spinal Disc Replacement, artificial spines are placed instead of damages spines.  Foraminotomy is a surgical procedure that relieves pressure on nerves. Kyphoplasty is used for those with a spinal fracture in order to relieve the pain.

Laminectomy relieves pressure on the spinal cord by enlarging the spinal canal.  In laminotomy, posterior part of the vertebra is removed and hence it relieves pressure on the spinal cord.  In Spinal fusion, two or more bones are fused together to correct the problems

  • One can live without pain.
  • No nerves inflammation present.
  • Can move easily without pain

Head Injury Management with Minimally Invasive Techniques

Headinjury is one of the most complicated of all injuries due to its ability to cause a profound effect on the physical and mental well being of a person. It is often defined as the alteration in the physical or mental state of a person due to a blow on head. The advent of minimally invasive head injury management techniques has greatly helped in simplifying the treatment and recovery.

Head injuries can occur due to falls, accidents or as a part of sports injury. They are often manifested through symptoms such as seizures, vomiting, disorientation, dizziness, fainting, confusion, lethargy and so on that are experienced after receiving blow to the head. They can be diagnosed through a series of cognitive tests, blood tests and scanning procedures.

Conventional open surgeries, especially conducted at prime location such as the brain area is associated with a lot of complexities. With the development of minimally invasive technology, we have been able to reduce the risk factor associated with the procedure.

Dr.Shyam Sundar K is one of the most renowned Neurosurgeon in Chennai with a world of experience gained through his stints across the various multi-specialty hospitals here. He is highly specialised in various realms of neurology and neurosurgery with an exception success rate in surgeries.

Minimally invasive treatment procedures for head injury are carried out with a thin tube called an endoscope that is attached with a high definition camera, which helps in better visualisation of the site of injury. They require smaller incisions which help in faster recovery and less pain associated with the surgery.

Microendoscopic head surgeries help in repair and removal of diseased areas without affecting the adjoining cells or areas. The various advantages of minimally invasive head injury management techniques are as follows: -
  • Shorter recovery and operating time
  • Reduced rates of mortality and morbidity
  • Minimal pain and blood loss
  • Cost effective and shorter hospitalisation
  • Reduced chances of complication or trauma
Dr.Shyam Sundar K is a leading neurosurgeon renowned for his effective treatment for various neurological disorders.

Spine Surgery - A Broken Spine Can Happen To Anyone

A spinal fracture also known as a vertebral compression fracture can be defined as a bone break in the spine. It occurs when one or more bone in the spinal canal collapses, breaks or gets fractured. These fractures and dislocations may pinch, compress, or even tear the spinal cord.

http://www.chennaibrainandspine.com/treatment-for-spinal-fractures.html

The following are the many different types of spinal fractures:

Compression Fracture: This type of fracture is caused by osteoporosis or a tumor and rarely has spinal cord or nerve involvement. Front of the vertebra fractures and loses height, however, the back, the posterior part remains stable.

Axial Burst Fraction: This is usually caused by a fall from a significant height or landing on the feet. Which results in the loss of vertebral height on both the front and back side

Chance Fracture: This type of fracture is caused by a violent forward flexed injury fracture, it is also known as a “seat-belt injury”.  Mostly it occurs when the vertebra is pulled apart, often from a car accident where the upper body is pulled forward while the pelvis is stabilized by a lap-only seatbelt.

The following are other terms where the doctors use to describe these fractures:

Stable fractures: There type of fractures will not cause spinal deformity or neurologic (nerve) problems. With this fracture, the spine can still carry and distribute your weight pretty well as if there weren't a fracture, but it's still able to function with a stable fracture.

Unstable fractures: This type of fracture make it difficult for the spine to carry and distribute weight. Unstable fractures progresses and causes further damage, It may also result in spinal deformity.

Treatment for Spinal Fractures

The treatment for spinal fractures will depend on the location and type of fracture. Dr Shyam Sundar is one of the leading Neurosurgeon in Tamil Nadu. The doctor provides advanced Treatment for Spinal Fractures in India at his Centre for Brain and Spine based in Chennai.

Treatment For Spinal Cord Tumor In India

A spinal cord tumor is a growth that develops in the spinal canal or the bones of the spine. It may be cancerous or non-cancerous. Tumors that occur in the spinal cord are known as spinal cord tumors and tumors that occur in the spine (vertebrae) bones are known as vertebral tumors. The spinal cord is a long column of nerve fibers that transmit messages to and from the brain.

http://chennaibrainandspine.com/spinal-cord-tumor.html

The spinal cord is surrounded by three protective membranes known as meninges. The tough outer membrane is the dura mater, the middle membrane is the arachnoid membrane, and the innermost membrane is the pia mater. The spinal cord tumors are categorized as per their location of occurrence in the spine.
  • Intradural
  • Extradural
Intradural tumors occur in the dura mater and further divided into two subcategories

Extramedullary tumors- tumors develop outside the spinal cord or in the nerve roots that extend out from the spinal cord

Intramedullary tumors- these tumors develop in the supporting cells in the spinal cord. Most of the tumors are astrocytomas or ependymomas.

Any kind of spinal tumors or growths can develop severe pain, neurological problems and sometimes paralysis. Spinal tumor of any form can be life threating and cause permanent disability.

Treatment for Spinal Cord Tumors

Treatment for spinal cord tumors may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or medications. If the spinal cord is compressing by developing a tumor, it is recommended to provide high doses of corticosteroids to reduce the swelling. It is good to treat such tumors as soon as possible. Sometimes it requires surgical removal of tumors. Radiation therapy is also used to remove the tumors, if surgery is not possible or tumor is not fully removed by surgery. Recovery depends on the severity of tumors.

Dr.Shyam Sundar Krishnan is one of the prominent doctors providing treatment for spinal cord tumors in India. He has many years of experience in spinal cord surgeries.  The hospital has all the latest equipments and facilities to treat spinal code tumors.

Removing Brain Tumor Like No One Else Can

A brain tumor is a collection or mass of abnormal cells in the brain. The skull which encloses the brain is very rigid, when tumors grow inside, it increases the pressure inside the skull which results in brain damage that may be life threatening. But it can be easily cured in one of the Best Brain Cancer Treatment Centers in Tamilnadu. Brain tumors are of two types malignant (cancerous) or Benign (noncancerous).

Brain tumors are categorized as follows:

Primary Brain Tumor: This type of tumor originates in the brain. They can develop from your:

  • Brain cells
  • The membranes that surround your brain, which are called meninges
  • Nerve cells
  • Glands
  • Primary tumors can be benign or cancerous.

Secondary Brain Tumor: Also known as metastatic brain tumor, make up the majority of brain cancers. This type of tumor starts at one part of the body and spread to the brain. The following can spread to the brain:

  • Lung cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Skin cancer
  • Secondary brain tumors are always malignant.

Mostly, the cause of brain tumor is unknown, but the following factors may raise a person’s risk of developing brain tumor:

  • Family history
  • Age
  • Race
  • Chemical exposure
  • Exposure to radiation

Symptoms

Brain tumor symptoms can be General (caused by the pressure of the tumor on the brain or spinal cord) or Specific (symptoms caused when a specific part of the brain is not working well)

General symptoms include:

  • Headaches, which may be severe and worsen with activity or in the early morning
  • Seizures
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sleep problems
  • Memory problems

Know More About Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a type of chronic disorder which can be seen in the form of recurrent and unprovoked seizures. Many individuals with epilepsy have more than one particular type of seizure and may have many other symptoms of neurological conditions as well.

http://www.chennaibrainandspine.com/epilepsy-caused-by-tumors-or-malformations-of-blood-vessels.html

Clinical history, EEG testing and family's history are similar among a particular group of people with epilepsy sometimes. In these situations, their condition is defined as a specific epilepsy syndrome.

Although a seizure can affect all or any part of the human body, the electrical activities that produce the symptoms occur in the human brain. The location of that activity, how it spreads all over and which part of the brain is affected and how much, and how long it lasts etc all have a great effect.

Having seizures and epilepsy can affect an individuals safety, relationships with friends & family, work life and so much more. Public perception of what epilepsy is and treatment of the people suffering from epilepsy are often bigger problems to deal with than the actual seizures.

Symptoms Of Epilepsy

  • Whole body: fainting or/and fatigue
  • Muscular: muscle contractions or muscle spasms
  • Cognitive: mental confusion or amnesia
  • Sensory: aura or pins and needles
  • Psychological: fear or depression
Sometimes patient may have headache, sleepiness, staring spells seizures, anxiety, blank stare, or temporary paralysis after a seizure

http://www.chennaibrainandspine.com/epilepsy-caused-by-tumors-or-malformations-of-blood-vessels.html

Causes Of Epilepsy

  • Brain infections
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Brain Tumors
  • Drug Abuse
  • Hypoxia
  • Infants with abnormal brain structures
  • Premature Infants
  • Family History

How is Epilepsy Treated?

The majority of epileptic seizures can be treated by medication solely, mainly by anticonvulsant drugs. The type of treatment followed will depend on a variety of factors, which includes the frequency and severity of the seizures and the individuals age, overall health, and medical history. An accurate diagnosis of the type of epilepsy is also important for choosing the best course of treatment. It can also be treated through drugs and many generic yet safe drugs are available for its treatment. This is a serious condition and needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Dr Shyam Sundar, an eminent neurosurgeon in Tamil Nadu, provides  neurological treatments and brain cancer treatment in Chennai at affordable cost.

Detect And Treat Stroke Before It’s Too Late..

A medical emergency, stroke is a condition which requires prompt medical attention to save the patient’s life. It occurs when the blood supply to brain is reduced or interrupted, resulting in a lack of nutrient and oxygen supply to the brain cells and tissues.

The disruption in blood supply might be due to a rupture or blockage of the blood vessels. The oxygen and nutrient deprivation can lead to death of brain cells that can cause complication if prompt treatment is not provided. An early intervention can limit the level of damage.

How to detect Stroke?

The main symptoms of stroke include: -
  • Inability to think and talk properly
  • Numbness of arm, leg or face
  • Blurred or blackened vision in one or both eyes
  • Severe and sudden headache
  • Trouble in walking.

Since the condition requires prompt attention, it is important to realise the symptoms quickly. To confirm the discomfort felt is the beginning of stroke think ‘FAST’.

Face –  check whether the persons smile makes a face droops to one side
Arms –  check if the person has trouble lifting one or both arms
Speech –  check for slurred speech
Time –  if the above are detected in the person, don’t waste time, get help as soon as possible.

Types of Strokes

  • Ischemic Stroke – most commonly found type of stroke, it is caused due to narrowed or blocked arteries that supply blood to the brain.
  • Haemorrhagic stroke – caused due to a rupture or leak in the blood vessels supplying blood to the brain.
  • Transient ischemic attack – also called as mini stroke, it occurs due to a decrease or reduced blood flow to the brain, which is temporary.

Risk factors for Stroke

The risk factors for stroke include hypertension, elevated level of cholesterol, cardiovascular diseases, heavy drinking, smoking, drugs, conditions like obesity, diabetes and so on. They are known to occur mainly in men and at an age over 55 years.

Treatment for Stroke

Stroke treatment is based on a diagnosis conducted with the help of MRI, Carotid scan, Brain angiogram and so on. The treatment procedure involves medications and surgical intervention and is decided upon depending on the intensity of the issue.

Dr Shyam Sundar, a pioneer in neurosurgery, is specialised in handling various neurological conditions. He provides treatment for stroke in Tamil Nadu.

Brain Aneurysm Symptoms and Treatment

A brain aneurysm is a neurological disorder where a ballooning or bulge is formed on the blood vessels present in the brain. It can resemble a cherry hanging from its stem. Brain aneurysms are mainly located on the blood vessels that form a network at the base of the brain. This formation is known as the Circle of Willis.
Brain aneurysms can be ruptured or unruptured. A ruptured aneurysm leaks blood into the brain. This can be life threatening and need immediate medical attention as it can lead to stroke. Unruptured aneurysm are usually undetected.

Symptoms
The symptoms of brain aneurysm are largely dependent on its location, intensity and condition. CT and CTA scan, MRI scan, angiography and cerebral angiogram are used to diagnose the presence of aneurysm. The main symptoms of ruptured brain aneurysm are: -
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Severe headache
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of sensation
  • Fainting
  • Seizures
  • Photophobia or sensitivity towards light
Unruptured aneurysm, if large in size, causes constant headaches, lack of concentration or processing ability, speech problems, lack of coordination or balance, sudden changes in behaviour and so on.
Causes
Aneurysms are a result of thinning walls in artery. They are usually formed at joints and forks of arteries where the cells are weak. Some of the main causes of this are infections that affect the artery walls, presence of tumours, abnormal flow of blood at the joints of arteries, use of drugs, brain trauma and atherosclerosis.
Treatment
Brain aneurysms are mainly treated by embolization, endovascular therapy or surgical clipping depending on the intensity of the issue.

A pioneer in the field of neurosurgery and neurology, Dr. Shyam Sundar K, is an eminent neurosurgeon in Chennai, India, who offers expert treatment in various branches of neurology. He provides advanced treatment for brain tumor in Chennai.

Know about Stroke and Its Warning Sign

When there is an interruption or sudden reduced blood supply to the brain, it leads to Stroke, which is a leading cause for many deaths. The reduced or interrupted blood supply to the brain occurs due to the blocked/ruptured blood vessels that ban the oxygen and nutrient feed to the brain. When brain cells begin to die, emergency medical treatment shall be given to the patient to avoid potential complications.

The major risk factors for stroke are
  • High blood pressure.
  • Diabetes.
  • Heart diseases.
  • Smoking.
  • Risk of stroke increases as you get older and men are more likely than women to have strokes.
  • Those who already had stroke are at higher risk for another one and one with the family history of stroke.
  • Brain aneurysms.
  • Alcohol and other drugs
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Overweight and Obesity
  • Stress and depression

http://www.chennaibrainandspine.com/stroke-treatments.php
  • sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • sudden trouble seeing.
  • sudden trouble speaking or understanding
  • sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Hemorrhagic stroke: This occurs when an artery in the brain bursts and leads to localized bleeding in the surrounding cells and tissues which kill the brain cells.
Ischemic stroke: It occurs when an artery to the brain is blocked. The neurons (brain cells) will not be able to pump the oxygen required for survival. This causes death of cells.
Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs)/Mini-Stroke: When the blood flow to the brain is stopped for a short period of time, it is called a TIA. It might mimic stroke symptoms and lasts for 24 hours. Though it will never cause permanent brain damage, TIA is an alert for occurrence of stroke in future and hence, should never be ignored.

Treatment for strokes differs from one kind to the other. The treatment methodology might include medication and surgical intervention with recovery and rehabilitation.
Hemorrhagic stroke treatments encompass controlling bleeding and pressure inside the brain. Generally, medicines are prescribed to lower pressure and prevent seizures. Once the bleeding stops, the stagnated blood is absorbed with a supportive medical care.
Stereotactic radiosurgery is a minimally invasive advanced surgery which repairs and corrects vascular malformations. To prevent aneurysms from bursting or re-bleeding, surgical clipping is done on the artery to stop blood flow.
Ischemic stroke treatment involves restoring blood flow to the brain. Clot-busting drugs are prescribed to dissolve the blood clots. A catheter with a small device is inserted into the brain to break up or grab the blood clot manually.
Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)/Mini Strokes are treated with antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulants. If the patient has moderate or severe narrowed carotid artery, the surgeon will perform carotid endarterectomy to clear fat deposits in the carotid arteries. It prevents TIA from relapsing.
Dr. Shyam Sundar K is a leading Neurosurgeon, offers treatment for stroke in Tamil Nadu with help of dedicated team.
